ART
1. Art
is a collaboration between God & the artist, & the
less the artist does the better.
2. Art
is the gift of God, & must be used unto His glory.--Henry
Wadsworth Longfellow
3. Nature
is the art of God.
4. Nature
is mighty. Art is mighty. Artifice is weak. For nature is
the work of a mightier power than man. Art is the work of
man under the guidance & inspiration of a mightier power.
Artifice is the work of mere man in the imbecility of his
mimic understanding.
5. Abstract
Art: A product of the untalented, sold by the unprincipled,
to the utterly bewildered.--Al Capp
6. True
art is reverent imitation of God.--Tryon
Edwards
7. Since
I have known God in a saving manner, painting, poetry & music
have had charms unknown to me before.--Henry
Martyn
8. A
zealous art student went to a gallery and spent a bewildered
hour looking over abstract and cubist works. She was finally
attracted to a painting consisting of a black dot on a field
of white and framed in brass. "How much for this?" she
asked. "That's the light switch," she was told.
9. In
1961, a Matisse hung upside down for 47 days before a visitor
to the New York Museum of Modern Art caught the mistake.
A record wrong-side-up display.
10. Two
teenagers on a tour of a modern art gallery found themselves
alone in a room of modern sculpture. Staring at the twisted
pipes, broken glass, and tangled shapes, one of them said, "Let's
get out of here before they accuse us of wrecking this place."
11. The
true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection.--Michelangelo
12. Art
ultimately exists for God's glory.
13. All
great art is the expression of man's delight in God's work,
not his own.--John Ruskin
14. Poetry
is the eloquence of truth.
15. Poetry
has been to me "its own exceeding great reward";
it has soothed my afflictions; it has multiplied & refined
my enjoyments; it has endeared solitude; & it has given
me the habit of wishing to discover the good & the beautiful
in all that meets & surrounds me.--Coleridge
16. God's
the One that gives the visions! He's the One Who inspires
you artists. When you kind of get a picture in your mind,
it's called a conception or an idea, sort of your imagination,
in a way. You've got to get a picture of it in your mind
first, so who else could give you these pictures but the
Lord? When you're really asking for them & praying for
them, you know that if you're asking for a fish He'll not
give you a serpent, & if you're asking for bread He'll
not give you a rock. (Mt.7:9,10) So how much more is He willing
to give these beautiful visions for you to paint! How willing
He must be to put the picture in your mind!
17. A
picture is a poem without words.--Horace
18. All
arts proceed from God & ought to be held as divine inventions.--John
Calvin
19. You
artists are not just trying to please the people, but you're
trying to please the Lord & you're trying to make it
His message, what He wants! So ask Him for guidance on every
stroke: "Now, Lord, is this what you want? Is this the
way you want it?--Not just what I want or my co-workers want,
but is this the way YOU want it?"--And then I know you'll
get divine guidance.
20. Nature
is the chart of God, mapping out all His attributes: Art
is the shadow of His wisdom, & copieth His resources.
21. Art,
as far as it is able, follows nature, as a pupil imitates
his master; thus your art must be, as it were, God's grandchild.--Dante--"Inferno"
22. Music
is a part of us, & either enobles or degrades our behaviour.
23. Where
the spirit does not work with the hand there is no art.--Leonardo
da Vinci
24. Art
is the gift of God, & must be used unto His glory.--Henry
Wordsworth Longfellow
