A. Many don't study the Word or know what it really says:HOS 4:6. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. MAT 12:3. But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him; MAT 12:4. How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests? MAT 12:5. Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? MAT 19:4. And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, MAT 22:29. Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. ACT 13:27. For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. 2COR 3:14. But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ. 2COR 3:15. But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart. 1TIM 1:7. Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm. JER 5:4. Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, nor the judgment of their God. ACT 13:27. For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. B. The dangers of being unlearned in the Word:2PE 3:16. As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. C. The ignorant can be easily led astray by false teachers:GAL 1:6. I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: GAL 1:7. Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 2TH 2:2. That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. 2TH 2:3. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 2TH 2:5. Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? D. Even many who know the Word don't obey it:JER 5:5. I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the LORD, and the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, and burst the bonds. JER 8:8. How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain. JER 8:9. The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in them? MAT 23:3. All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. ROM 2:17. Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God, ROM 2:18. And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law; ROM 2:19. And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness, ROM 2:20. An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law. ROM 2:21. Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal? ROM 2:22. Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege? ROM 2:23. Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God? ROM 2:24. For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written. E. Some though familiar with the Word are not even saved:JER 2:8. The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit. JOH 3:1. There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: JOH 3:2. The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. JOH 3:3. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. JOH 3:4. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? JOH 3:5. Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. JOH 3:6. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. JOH 3:7. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. JOH 3:8. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. JOH 3:9. Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? JOH 3:10. Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? |
