  • A. Beware of exalting doctrines of man above the Word:

    ISA 29:13. Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

    MAT 15:3. But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

    MAT 15:9. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

    MAR 7:9. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

    MAR 7:13. Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

    2TI 4:3. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

    2TI 4:4. And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

    B. "Denominationalism" & needless doctrinal divisions:

    ROM 14:1. Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.

    ROM 14:2. For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.

    ROM 14:3. Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.

    ROM 14:4. Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.

    ROM 14:5. One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

    ROM 14:6. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.

    1COR 1:10. Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

    1COR 1:11. For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.

    1COR 1:12. Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.

    1COR 1:13. Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?

    1COR 3:21. Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are your's;

    1COR 3:22. Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are your's;

    1COR 3:23. And ye are Christ's; and Christ is God's.

    1TIM 6:3. If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;

    1TIM 6:4. He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,

    JOH 4:20. Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

    JOH 4:21. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

    ACT 15:5. But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

    ACT 15:24. Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:

    C. Prestige-seeking leaders create their own factions:

    ACT 20:30. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

    2TI 1:15. This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.

    D. Splitting theological hairs while disobeying the Word:

    MAT 23:24. Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

    LUK 11:42. But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

    E. Twisting the Word to suit personal doctrines:

    1TIM 1:5. Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

    1TIM 1:6. From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;

    2PE 1:20. Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

    2PE 3:16. As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

    F. Stick to solid Scriptural doctrines:

    1TIM 4:6. If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.

    1TIM 4:7. But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.

    1TIM 6:3. If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;

    1TIM 6:4. He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,

    TIT 1:14. Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.

    COL 2:8. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

    COL 2:9. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

    2TI 1:13. Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

    2TI 2:14. Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.

    2TI 2:15. Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

    2TI 2:16. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

    2TI 2:23. But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.

    TIT 1:9. Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

    TIT 2:1. But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:

    TIT 2:8. Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.

    TIT 3:9. But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

    G. Beware of unbelieving modernism:

    JER 8:9. The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in them?

    ACT 23:8. For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.

    1COR 15:12. Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?

    1COR 15:13. But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:

    1COR 15:14. And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.

    1COR 15:15. Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.

    1COR 15:16. For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:

    1COR 15:17. And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.

    GAL 1:9. As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

    2TI 3:5. Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

    2PE 2:1. But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
