A. Pretending they love God they persecute others:GEN 4:3. And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. GEN 4:4. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: GEN 4:5. But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. GEN 4:6. And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? GEN 4:7. If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. GEN 4:8. And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. 1JO 3:12. Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous. 1JO 3:13. Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you. ISA 66:5. Hear the word of the LORD, ye that tremble at his word; Your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name's sake, said, Let the LORD be glorified: but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed. JOH 16:2. They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. GAL 4:29. But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. LAM 4:13. For the sins of her prophets, and the iniquities of her priests, that have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her, LAM 4:14. They have wandered as blind men in the streets, they have polluted themselves with blood, so that men could not touch their garments. MAT 27:40. When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him. B. Religious jealousy results in persecution:MAR 15:10. For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy. JOH 11:47. Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. JOH 11:48. If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. JOH 11:49. And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, JOH 11:50. Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. JOH 11:53. Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death. ACT 13:44. And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God. ACT 13:45. But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.
