2. How to receive God's comfort:

A. Pray and ask for His help:

2CH 15:4. But when they in their trouble did turn unto the LORD God of Israel, and sought him, he was found of them.

PSA 34:17. The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.

PSA 86:7. In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me.

PSA 119:76. Let, I pray thee, thy merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to thy word unto thy servant.

PSA 145:18. The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.

PSA 145:19. He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.

PHI 4:6. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

PHI 4:7. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

HEB 4:16. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

B. Examples of King David's prayers seeking comfort:

PSA 31:9. Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, yea, my soul and my belly.

PSA 31:10. For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are consumed.

PSA 31:11. I was a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially among my neighbours, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without fled from me.

PSA 31:12. I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel.

PSA 38:9. Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee.

PSA 51:1. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

PSA 51:2. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

PSA 51:3. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.

PSA 51:4. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.

PSA 51:5. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

PSA 51:6. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

PSA 51:7. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

PSA 51:8. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

PSA 51:9. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.

PSA 51:10. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

PSA 51:11. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

PSA 51:12. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

PSA 51:13. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

PSA 51:14. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.

PSA 51:15. O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.

PSA 51:16. For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.

PSA 51:17. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

PSA 51:18. Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.

PSA 51:19. Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.

PSA 69:1. Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul.

PSA 69:2. I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.

PSA 102:1. Hear my prayer, O LORD, and let my cry come unto thee.

PSA 102:2. Hide not thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble; incline thine ear unto me: in the day when I call answer me speedily.

PSA 102:3. For my days are consumed like smoke, and my bones are burned as an hearth.

PSA 102:4. My heart is smitten, and withered like grass; so that I forget to eat my bread.

PSA 102:5. By reason of the voice of my groaning my bones cleave to my skin.

PSA 102:6. I am like a pelican of the wilderness: I am like an owl of the desert.

PSA 102:7. I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the house top.

C. Read & meditate on God's Word:

PSA 119:50. This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.

ROM 15:4. For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

D. Stay obedient & close to Him:

JOH 8:29. And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.

PSA 103:17. But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children;

PSA 103:18. To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.

E. Continue trusting & have patience:

GEN 28:15. And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

PSA 42:3. My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?

PSA 42:4. When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.

PSA 42:5. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

PSA 42:6. O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.

PSA 42:7. Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.

PSA 42:8. Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the day time, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.

PSA 42:9. I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

PSA 42:10. As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?

PSA 42:11. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

PSA 119:81. My soul fainteth for thy salvation: but I hope in thy word.

PSA 119:82. Mine eyes fail for thy word, saying, When wilt thou comfort me?

PSA 119:83. For I am become like a bottle in the smoke; yet do I not forget thy statutes.

HEB 10:35. Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.

HEB 10:36. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.

F. Remind yourself of God's past miracles & mercies:

PSA 77:1. I cried unto God with my voice, even unto God with my voice; and he gave ear unto me.

PSA 77:2. In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted.

PSA 77:3. I remembered God, and was troubled: I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah.

PSA 77:4. Thou holdest mine eyes waking: I am so troubled that I cannot speak.

PSA 77:5. I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.

PSA 77:6. I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search.

PSA 77:7. Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more?

PSA 77:8. Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore?

PSA 77:9. Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah.

PSA 77:10. And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High.

PSA 77:11. I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.

PSA 77:12. I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.

PSA 119:52. I remembered thy judgments of old, O LORD; and have comforted myself.

G. Encourage & remind yourself of God's faithfulness:

1SA 30:6. And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.

H. Remember God will never forsake you ...

ISA 49:14. But Zion said, The LORD hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me.

ISA 49:15. Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.

ISA 49:16. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.

PSA 31:22. For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes: nevertheless thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee.

PSA 9:9. The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.

PSA 9:10. And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

MAT 28:20. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen

2TI 2:13. If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

HEB 13:5. Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

ISA 54:10. For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee.

I. ... Unless you grievously rebel & forsake Him:

2CH 15:2. And he went out to meet Asa, and said unto him, Hear ye me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin; The LORD is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you.

1CH 28:9. And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.

J. Even then He will not permanently forsake you:

ISA 54:7. For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee.

ISA 54:8. In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the LORD thy Redeemer.

K. Trust & completely commit yourself into His hands:

ROM 8:28. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

1PE 4:19. Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

L. He will keep you:

2TI 1:12. For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

PSA 23:4. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

PSA 37:5. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

PSA 55:22. Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

PSA 138:8. The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.

PHI 1:6. Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

1TH 5:24. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

1PE 5:7. Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
