7. Why & how to comfort one another:

A. Sometimes you need the help of others:

JER 8:18. When I would comfort myself against sorrow, my heart is faint in me.

2CO 2:7. So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.

ECC 4:9. Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.

ECC 4:10. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.

ECC 4:12. And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

B. We should comfort one another:

GEN 37:34. And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.

GEN 37:35. And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.

1CH 7:22. And Ephraim their father mourned many days, and his brethren came to comfort him.

JOB 2:11. Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

ISA 40:1. Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.

ISA 61:1. The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

ISA 61:2. To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

ISA 61:3. To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

1CO 12:25. That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.

2CO 2:8. Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.

2CO 7:6. Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus;

EPH 6:22. Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that ye might know our affairs, and that he might comfort your hearts.

COL 4:7. All my state shall Tychicus declare unto you, who is a beloved brother, and a faithful minister and fellowservant in the Lord:

COL 4:8. Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that he might know your estate, and comfort your hearts;

1TH 3:2. And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith:

2CO 7:13. Therefore we were comforted in your comfort: yea, and exceedingly the more joyed we for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all.

GAL 6:2. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

COL 2:2. That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;

COL 4:11. And Jesus, which is called Justus, who are of the circumcision. These only are my fellowworkers unto the kingdom of God, which have been a comfort unto me.

1TH 5:11. Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

1TH 5:14. Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.

C. How to comfort others:

GEN 50:21. Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.

RTH 2:13. Then she said, Let me find favour in thy sight, my lord; for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine handmaid, though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens.

PRO 17:22. A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

PRO 27:9. Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.

1TH 2:11. As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children,

ROM 12:15. Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

D. Use your own experiences to comfort them:

2CO 1:4. Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

PSA 66:12. Thou hast caused men to ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water: but thou broughtest us out into a wealthy place.

PSA 66:16. Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he hath done for my soul.

E. The comforting consoling power of inspired music:

PSA 32:7. Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.

PSA 42:5. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

PSA 42:6. O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.

PSA 42:7. Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.

PSA 42:8. Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the day time, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.

1SA 16:14. But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

1SA 16:15. And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

1SA 16:16. Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

1SA 16:23. And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

PRO 25:20. As he that taketh away a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to an heavy heart.

F. Encouraging words of prophecy are a comfort:

1CO 14:3. But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

G. When words fail just being there is a help:

JOB 2:13. So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.

COL 2:2. That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;

H. Make sure you are comforting not condemning:

JOB 16:2. I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are ye all.

JOB 16:3. Shall vain words have an end? or what emboldeneth thee that thou answerest?

JOB 16:4. I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul's stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake mine head at you.

JOB 16:5. But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips should asswage your grief.
