A. Leaving all else to follow Jesus:LUK 14:33. So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. MAT 13:44. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. MAT 13:45. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: MAT 13:46. Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it. B. Forsaking material possessions:MAT 6:19. Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: MAT 6:20. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: MAR 10:21. Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. ACT 4:34. Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, ACT 4:35. And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need. MAT 19:22. But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. LUK 12:33. Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. C. Forsaking worldly pursuits & jobs:MAT 6:24. No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. MAR 4:19. And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. MAR 10:17. And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? MAR 10:18. And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. MAR 10:19. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. MAR 10:20. And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. MAR 10:21. Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. MAR 10:22. And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions. MAR 10:23. And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! MAR 10:24. And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! MAR 10:25. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. JOH 6:27. Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. 2TIM 2:4. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. HEB 12:1. Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2COR 6:17.
