A. Faith is a gift from God:HEB 12:2. Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. ROM 12:3. For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. 1COR 12:7. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 1COR 12:9. To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; GAL 5:22. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, EPH 6:23. Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. B. Pray for it:MAR 9:24. And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. LUK 17:5. And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith. C. Read the Word:ROM 10:17. So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. JOH 20:30. And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: JOH 20:31. But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. ACT 15:7. And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. ROM 15:4. For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. D. The Word nourishes & builds up our faith:ACT 20:32. And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. 1TIM 4:6. If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. E. Read the Word in a receptive believing spirit:LUK 8:15. But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience. HEB 4:2. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. HEB 11:13. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. F. Listen to testimonies of faith:2KI 5:1. Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honourable, because by him the LORD had given deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty man in valour, but he was a leper. 2KI 5:2. And the Syrians had gone out by companies, and had brought away captive out of the land of Israel a little maid; and she waited on Naaman's wife. 2KI 5:3. And she said unto her mistress, Would God my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his leprosy. 2KI 5:4. And one went in, and told his lord, saying, Thus and thus said the maid that is of the land of Israel. 2KI 5:5. And the king of Syria said, Go to, go, and I will send a letter unto the king of Israel. And he departed, and took with him ten talents of silver, and six thousand pieces of gold, and ten changes of raiment. JOH 4:28. The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, JOH 4:29. Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ? JOH 4:30. Then they went out of the city, and came unto him. JOH 4:39. And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did. JOH 17:20. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; 2PE 1:16. For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 2PE 1:19. We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: G. Miracles glorify God's power & often inspire faith:ACT 3:1. Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. ACT 3:2. And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; ACT 3:3. Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. ACT 3:4. And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. ACT 3:5. And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. ACT 3:6. Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. ACT 3:7. And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. ACT 3:8. And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. ACT 3:9. And all the people saw him walking and praising God: ACT 3:10. And they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him. ACT 3:11. And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon's, greatly wondering. ACT 3:12. And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk? ACT 3:13. The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go. ACT 3:16. And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. ACT 4:4. Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand. ACT 8:5. Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. ACT 8:6. And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. ACT 8:14. Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: ACT 9:36. Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did. ACT 9:37. And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber. ACT 9:38. And forasmuch as Lydda was nigh to Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent unto him two men, desiring him that he would not delay to come to them. ACT 9:39. Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them. ACT 9:40. But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up. ACT 9:41. And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive. ACT 9:42. And it was known throughout all Joppa; and many believed in the Lord. 1KI 18:30. And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down. 1KI 18:31. And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name: 1KI 18:32. And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed. 1KI 18:33. And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood. 1KI 18:34. And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time. 1KI 18:35. And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water. 1KI 18:36. And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word. 1KI 18:37. Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again. 1KI 18:38. Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. 1KI 18:39. And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God. 2KI 5:9. So Naaman came with his horses and with his chariot, and stood at the door of the house of Elisha. 2KI 5:10. And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean. 2KI 5:11. But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the LORD his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper. 2KI 5:12. Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage. 2KI 5:13. And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean? 2KI 5:14. Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean. 2KI 5:15. And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came, and stood before him: and he said, Behold, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel: now therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing of thy servant. 2KI 5:16. But he said, As the LORD liveth, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And he urged him to take it; but he refused. 2KI 5:17. And Naaman said, Shall there not then, I pray thee, be given to thy servant two mules' burden of earth? for thy servant will henceforth offer neither burnt offering nor sacrifice unto other gods, but unto the LORD. H. Faith grows:2TH 1:3. We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth; I. Becoming strengthened & steadfast in the faith:ACT 14:22. Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. 1COR 16:13. Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. COL 1:23. If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister; COL 2:6. As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: COL 2:7. Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. J. We should have faith when we pray:MAT 21:21. Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. MAT 21:22. And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. MAR 11:24. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. ROM 4:21. And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. HEB 10:22. Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. JAM 1:5. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. JAM 1:6. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. |
