A. It can cause you to become bound:PRO 29:25. The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe. HEB 2:15. And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. B. It can cause weakness:JOB 4:14. Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake. ISA 13:8. And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames. JER 6:24. We have heard the fame thereof: our hands wax feeble: anguish hath taken hold of us, and pain, as of a woman in travail. JER 6:25. Go not forth into the field, nor walk by the way; for the sword of the enemy and fear is on every side. C. It can sap your will to fight & cause defeat:LEV 26:36. And upon them that are left alive of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth. LEV 26:37. And they shall fall one upon another, as it were before a sword, when none pursueth: and ye shall have no power to stand before your enemies. JOS 2:11. And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath. It hinders you from witnessing or standing up for your convictions:MAT 26:56. But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there. NUM 13:31. Fear can even cause sickness & death:LUK 21:26. Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. 1SA 14:15. And there was trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled, and the earth quaked: so it was a very great trembling. 1SA 14:16. And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one another. 1SA 28:5. And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled. H. If not checked fear can get a grip on you:PSA 48:6. Fear took hold upon them there, and pain, as of a woman in travail. PSA 55:5. Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me. JER 6:22. Thus saith the LORD, Behold, a people cometh from the north country, and a great nation shall be raised from the sides of the earth. JER 6:23. They shall lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roareth like the sea; and they ride upon horses, set in array as men for war against thee, O daughter of Zion. And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you. LEV 26:36. In the morning thou shalt say, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. JOB 18:11. Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and shall drive him to his feet. JOB 18:14. His confidence shall be rooted out of his tabernacle, and it shall bring him to the king of terrors. PSA 53:5. There were they in great fear, where no fear was: for God hath scattered the bones of him that encampeth against thee: thou hast put them to shame, because God hath despised them. PRO 28:1. The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion. J. Fears can materialise & become real things:JOB 3:25. For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me. PRO 10:24. The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire of the righteous shall be granted. ISA 66:4. I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not. K. Fear is contagious & can affect others:DEU 20:8. And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren's heart faint as well as his heart. JDG 7:3. Now therefore go to, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand. JDG 7:19. So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands.
