A. Counselling with others who know the Lord & His Word well:EXO 18:25. And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. EXO 18:26. And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves. DEU 17:8. If there arise a matter too hard for thee in judgment, between blood and blood, between plea and plea, and between stroke and stroke, being matters of controversy within thy gates: then shalt thou arise, and get thee up into the place which the LORD thy God shall choose; DEU 17:9. And thou shalt come unto the priests the Levites, and unto the judge that shall be in those days, and enquire; and they shall shew thee the sentence of judgment: DEU 17:10. And thou shalt do according to the sentence, which they of that place which the LORD shall choose shall shew thee; and thou shalt observe to do according to all that they inform thee: DEU 17:11. According to the sentence of the law which they shall teach thee, and according to the judgment which they shall tell thee, thou shalt do: thou shalt not decline from the sentence which they shall shew thee, to the right hand, nor to the left. PRO 11:14. Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety. PRO 15:22. Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established. PRO 20:18. Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war. 2COR 13:1. This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established. ACT 11:22. Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch. ACT 11:23. Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. ACT 15:22. Then pleased it the apostles and elders with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas and Silas, chief men among the brethren: ACT 15:32. And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them. B. Coming to a reasonable agreement:ACT 15:25. It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, ACT 15:28. For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; C. Warnings about not seeking (or not heeding) godly counsel:PRO 15:22. Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established. 2CH 10:1. And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for to Shechem were all Israel come to make him king. 2CH 10:2. And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was in Egypt, whither he fled from the presence of Solomon the king, heard it, that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt. 2CH 10:3. And they sent and called him. So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spake to Rehoboam, saying, 2CH 10:4. Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee. 2CH 10:5. And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed. 2CH 10:6. And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people? 2CH 10:7. And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever. 2CH 10:8. But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him. 2CH 10:9. And he said unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us? 2CH 10:10. And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins. 2CH 10:11. For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. 2CH 10:12. So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come again to me on the third day. 2CH 10:13. And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men, 2CH 10:14. And answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. 2CH 10:15. So the king hearkened not unto the people: for the cause was of God, that the LORD might perform his word, which he spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat. ACT 27:9. Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished them, ACT 27:10. And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives. ACT 27:11. Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul. ACT 27:12. And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice, and there to winter; which is an haven of Crete, and lieth toward the south west and north west. ACT 27:13. And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, loosing thence, they sailed close by Crete. ACT 27:14. But not long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon. ACT 27:15. And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let her drive. ACT 27:21. But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss. ACT 27:41. And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves. D. Be willing to change plans if God leads otherwise:2SAM 7:1. And it came to pass, when the king sat in his house, and the LORD had given him rest round about from all his enemies; 2SAM 7:2. That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains. 2SAM 7:3. And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the LORD is with thee. 2SAM 7:4. And it came to pass that night, that the word of the LORD came unto Nathan, saying, 2SAM 7:5. Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the LORD, Shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in? 2SAM 7:6. Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle. 2SAM 7:7. In all the places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Why build ye not me an house of cedar? 2SAM 7:8. Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel: 2SAM 7:9. And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth. 2SAM 7:10. Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime, 2SAM 7:11. And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house. 2SAM 7:12. And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. 2SAM 7:13. He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. |
