A. Slander infamy lies:PSA 69:9. For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me. PSA 69:10. When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach. PSA 69:11. I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them. PSA 69:12. They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards. PSA 119:51. The proud have had me greatly in derision: yet have I not declined from thy law. MAT 5:11. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. LUK 6:22. Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. LUK 22:63. And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him. LUK 22:64. And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee? LUK 22:65. And many other things blasphemously spake they against him. ACT 14:2. But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren. ACT 28:22. But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against. 1COR 4:13. Being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day. PSA 35:16. With hypocritical mockers in feasts, they gnashed upon me with their teeth. PSA 35:21. Yea, they opened their mouth wide against me, and said, Aha, aha, our eye hath seen it. B. Persecutors twist words to defame:ISA 29:21. That make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of nought. ISA 56:5. Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off. MAT 22:15. Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. MAR 12:13. And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words. LUK 11:53. And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things: LUK 11:54. Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him. LUK 20:20. And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor. C. Lying accusations & false charges:PSA 35:11. False witnesses did rise up; they laid to my charge things that I knew not. MAT 26:59. Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death; MAT 26:60. But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses, MAT 26:61. And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days. LUK 23:2. And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King. LUK 23:5. And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place. JER 38:4. Therefore the princes said unto the king, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt. ACT 6:11. Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God. ACT 6:12. And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council, ACT 6:13. And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law: ACT 16:19. And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers, ACT 16:20. And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city, ACT 16:21. And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans. ACT 17:5. But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. ACT 17:6. And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also; ACT 17:7. Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus. ACT 18:12. And when Gallio was the deputy of Achaia, the Jews made insurrection with one accord against Paul, and brought him to the judgment seat, ACT 18:13. Saying, This fellow persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law. ACT 24:5. For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes: 2TIM 2:8. Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: 2TIM 2:9. Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. PSA 94:20. Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, which frameth mischief by a law? D. Character assassination:LUK 7:34. The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners! JOH 7:12. And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people. JOH 9:24. Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner. E. Accusations of being of the devil:MAT 10:24. The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord. MAT 10:25. It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household? MAT 9:34. But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils. MAR 3:22. And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils. JOH 8:48. Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil? JOH 10:20. And many of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him? F. Charges of religious insanity:MAR 3:21. And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself. JOH 10:20. And many of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him? ACT 26:24. And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad. G. Persecution through fear of society's disapproval:JOH 9:22. These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. JOH 12:42. Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: |
