Prayer

1. How to pray:
PreviousNext

LUK 11:1. And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

LUK 11:2. And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

LUK 11:3. Give us day by day our daily bread.

LUK 11:4. And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

MAT 6:9. After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

MAT 6:10. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

MAT 6:11. Give us this day our daily bread.

MAT 6:12. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

MAT 6:13. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

A. Praise & thank the Lord before petitioning Him:

PSA 95:2. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.

PSA 100:4. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

PHI 4:6. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

B. If you have the gift of tongues pray & praise in it:

1COR 14:2. For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

1COR 14:4. He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

ROM 8:26. Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

ROM 8:27. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

EPH 6:18. Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

JUDE 20. But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,

1COR 14:39. Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

C. Be specific & ask for what you need:

1KI 3:5. In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.

1KI 3:9. Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?

1KI 3:10. And the speech pleased the LORD, that Solomon had asked this thing.

MAT 7:7. Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

MAT 7:8. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

MAT 21:22. And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

JOH 16:24. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

PHI 4:6. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

JAM 4:2. Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

D. Pray in Jesus' name:

JOH 14:13. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

JOH 14:14. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

JOH 16:23. And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

JOH 15:16. Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

JOH 16:26. At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:

EPH 2:18. For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

E. Prayer also includes you listening to God:

1SA 3:9. Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

1SA 3:10. And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.

GEN 24:63. And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming.

PSA 46:10. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

ECC 5:1. Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.

sacrifice, he hath bid his guests.

ZEC 2:13. Be silent, O all flesh, before the LORD: for he is raised up out of his holy habitation.

F. Listen by meditating on God's Word:

JOS 1:8. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

PSA 1:2. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

PSA 119:148. Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word.

1TIM 4:15. Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.

G. Be diligent to pray not lazy:

ISA 64:7. And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.

DAN 9:13. As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand thy truth.

JON 1:6. So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.

LUK 18:1. And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.
