A. Because only the Lord is great; we are not:PSA 66:5. Come and see the works of God: he is terrible in his doing toward the children of men. PSA 66:6. He turned the sea into dry land: they went through the flood on foot: there did we rejoice in him. PSA 66:7. He ruleth by his power for ever; his eyes behold the nations: let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Selah. PSA 97:9. For thou, LORD, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods. EZE 28:2. Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God: PHI 2:9. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: PHI 2:10. That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; PSA 21:13. Be thou exalted, LORD, in thine own strength: so will we sing and praise thy power. PSA 57:5. Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; let thy glory be above all the earth. PSA 57:11. Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: let thy glory be above all the earth. PSA 108:5. Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: and thy glory above all the earth; ISA 2:11. The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day. ISA 2:17. And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day. B. God alone should get the glory:ACT 12:20. And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king's chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king's country. ACT 12:21. And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. ACT 12:22. And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. ACT 12:23. And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost. 1COR 10:31. Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. JER 9:23. Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: JER 9:24. But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD. 1COR 1:28. And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: 1COR 1:29. That no flesh should glory in his presence. C. Pride makes us ignore & forget God:DEU 8:14. Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage; PSA 10:4. The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts. HOS 13:6. According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted; therefore have they forgotten me. D. God will distance Himself from & resist the proud:PSA 138:6. Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off. JAM 4:6. But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. E. Pride makes us ignore & disobey the Word:NEH 9:16. But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks, and hearkened not to thy commandments, NEH 9:17. And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not. NEH 9:29. And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy commandments, but sinned against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear. F. It gives us an exaggerated sense of greatness:OBA 1:3. The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground? ROM 12:3. For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. GAL 6:3. For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself. G. It creates self-exaltation & a desire to be honoured:PRO 25:27. It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search their own glory is not glory. MAT 23:5. But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, MAT 23:6. And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, MAT 23:7. And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. MAR 12:38. And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces, MAR 12:39. And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts: JUD 1:16. These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage. H. When we seek to please men- we often displease the Lord:1SA 15:30. Then he said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God. JOH 5:44. How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only? JOH 12:43. For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. GAL 1:10. For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. I. Pride makes us think we are wise:PRO 3:7. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. 1COR 3:18. Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. 1COR 8:2. And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know. J. Pride gives us a know-it-all attitude:PSA 131:1. Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me. PRO 26:12. Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him. 1TIM 1:7. Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm. K. Pride causes arguments:PRO 13:10. Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom. PRO 28:25. He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made fat. PRO 14:3. In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them. PRO 21:24. Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath. L. Pride corrupts us:MAR 7:22. Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: MAR 7:23. All these evil things come from within, and defile the man. M. Pride will bring about our downfall:PRO 11:2. When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom. PRO 16:18. Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. PRO 18:12. Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility. PRO 29:23. A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. EZE 28:12. Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. EZE 28:13. Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. EZE 28:14. Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. EZE 28:15. Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. EZE 28:16. By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. EZE 28:17. Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee. ISA 14:12. How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! ISA 14:13. For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: ISA 14:14. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. ISA 14:15. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. DAN 5:18. O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour: DAN 5:20. But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him: DAN 5:21. And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will. 1COR 10:12.
