Pride, Self-Righteousness & Humility

3. Some causes of pride:
PreviousNext

A. Beauty:

EZE 28:17. Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

B. Material abundance:

DEU 8:12. Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein;

DEU 8:13. And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;

DEU 8:14. Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;

DEU 8:17. And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.

EZE 28:5. By thy great wisdom and by thy traffick hast thou increased thy riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy riches:

HOS 13:6. According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted; therefore have they forgotten me.

C. Being overly secure:

PSA 73:5. They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men.

PSA 73:6. Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment.

D. Being overly affected by exaltation:

2CH 26:15. And he made in Jerusalem engines, invented by cunning men, to be on the towers and upon the bulwarks, to shoot arrows and great stones withal. And his name spread far abroad; for he was marvellously helped, till he was strong.

2CH 26:16. But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense.

DAN 11:11. And the king of the south shall be moved with choler, and shall come forth and fight with him, even with the king of the north: and he shall set forth a great multitude; but the multitude shall be given into his hand.

DAN 11:12. And when he hath taken away the multitude, his heart shall be lifted up; and he shall cast down many ten thousands: but he shall not be strengthened by it.

1TIM 3:6. Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

E. Carnal mindedness (intellectual pride):

GEN 2:16. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

GEN 2:17. But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

GEN 3:16. Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

1TIM 6:3. If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;

1TIM 6:4. He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,

JER 9:23. Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:

JER 9:24. But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.

ROM 8:6. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

ROM 8:7. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

JAM 3:14. But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

JAM 3:15. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.

JAM 3:16. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
