A. Because God loves & delights in the humble:PSA 51:17. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. PSA 138:6. Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off. 1PE 3:4. But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. 1PE 5:5. Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. B. He is close to the humble:PSA 34:18. The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. ISA 57:15. For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. C. He requires us to be humble:MIC 6:8. He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? COL 3:12. Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; D. Humility brings honour & blessing:PRO 22:4. By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life. PRO 29:23. A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. E. If we are humble God will exalt us:MAT 23:12. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. LUK 1:52. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. F. God helps the humble:PSA 9:12. When he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them: he forgetteth not the cry of the humble. PSA 25:9. The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way. PSA 34:18. And he did very abominably in following idols, according to all things as did the Amorites, whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel. 1KI 21:27. And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly. 1KI 21:28. And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 1KI 21:29. Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his son's days will I bring the evil upon his house. 2CH 32:26. Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah. H. God gives the humble true wisdom:PRO 11:2. When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom. 1COR 3:18. Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. LUK 10:21. In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight. I. Humility is true greatness in God's eyes:ECC 7:8. Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. MAT 18:4. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. MAT 19:30. But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first. MAR 10:43. But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: LUK 22:26. But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. J. God uses & exalts the humble:1SA 15:17. And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel? PRO 15:33. The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility. JAM 4:10. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. 1PE 5:6. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: K. Other blessings upon the meek:PSA 37:11. But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. PSA 149:4. For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation. MAT 5:5. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. |
