Our Relationship With the Lord

3. We are to love God above all else:
PreviousNext

MAT 22:37. Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

A. We are not to loveor putanything before Him:

EXO 20:3. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

PSA 96:4. For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods.

B. God is jealous of your love for Him; don't provoke Him:

EXO 20:3. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

EXO 20:5. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

EXO 34:14. For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:

DEU 32:16. They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations provoked they him to anger.

DEU 32:21. They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.

ISA 42:8. I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

1COR 10:22. Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

C. We are not even to love our loved ones more than God:

GEN 22:12. And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.

MAT 10:37. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

LUK 14:26. If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

D. We are not even to seek our physical needs above God:

MAT 4:4. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

MAT 6:24. No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

MAT 6:33. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

PSA 84:10. For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.

PSA 84:11. For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

MAT 6:25. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

MAT 6:26. Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

MAT 6:27. Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

MAT 6:28. And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

MAT 6:29. And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

MAT 6:30. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

MAT 6:31. Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

MAT 6:32. (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

E. Seek Heavenly things don't be overly attached to earthly things:

MAT 6:20. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

MAT 6:21. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

LUK 12:15. And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

COL 3:1. If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

COL 3:2. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

HEB 10:34. For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.

F. Don't even put God's service above loving God:

LUK 11:42. But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

REV 2:3. And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.

REV 2:4. Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.

REV 2:5. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

LUK 10:38. Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

LUK 10:39. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.

LUK 10:40. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

LUK 10:41. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:

LUK 10:42. But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
