Our Relationship With the Lord

8. Hindrances to our relationship with the Lord:

A. Being too busy to take time with Him:

ISA 28:12. To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

MAT 23:37. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

LUK 10:39. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.

LUK 10:40. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

JOH 5:40. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

B. Becoming caught up with the world & its cares:

MAT 13:22. He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.

LUK 8:14. And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.

2TIM 2:4. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

1JOH 2:15. Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

C. Cooling off & losing our first love:

JER 2:2. Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.

JER 2:3. Israel was holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD.

JER 2:4. Hear ye the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel:

JER 2:5. Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?

MAT 24:12. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

REV 2:4. Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.

REV 2:5. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

D. Doubting the Lord's love for you:

MAL 1:2. I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob,

E. Harbouring unrepented sin in our hearts:

PSA 66:18. If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:

ISA 59:2. But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

F. Being too full of our own thoughts:

ISA 65:2. I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts;

PSA 10:4. The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.

PSA 119:113. I hate vain thoughts: but thy law do I love.

ISA 55:7. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
