Our Relationship to the World

2. Though in this world we are not to be part of it:
PreviousNext

A. Christians are not part of this present worldly society:

JOH 17:14. I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

JOH 17:15. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

JOH 17:16. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

ROM 12:2. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

EPH 2:2. Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

EPH 2:3. Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

GAL 6:14. But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

PHI 2:15. That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;

1JO 4:4. Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

1JO 4:5. They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.

1JO 4:6. We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

1JO 5:19. And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.

1PE 2:9. But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;

B. We are not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers:

2COR 6:14. Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

2COR 6:15. And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

C. We are not to have close friendship with the Christ-rejecting worldly:

PRO 1:15. My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:

PRO 24:1. Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.

1COR 10:20. But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

1COR 10:21. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.

EPH 5:11. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

PRO 4:14. Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.

PRO 4:15. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.

PRO 4:16. For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.

PRO 4:17. For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.

PRO 13:20. He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

D. We are to be separate from the worldly:

ISA 52:11. Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the LORD.

2COR 6:17. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.

REV 18:4. And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

E. Do not become entirely separate; we must witness:

JOH 17:15. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

JOH 17:18. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

MAR 16:15. And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

F. Marriage with the unbelieving & worldly is discouraged:

DEU 7:3. Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.

DEU 7:4. For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.

JOS 23:12. Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:

JOS 23:13. Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.

1KI 11:1. But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites:

1KI 11:2. Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love.

1KI 11:3. And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart.

1KI 11:4. For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.

1KI 11:5. For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.

1KI 11:6. And Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and went not fully after the LORD, as did David his father.

1KI 11:7. Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon.

1KI 11:8. And likewise did he for all his strange wives, which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods.

NEH 13:26. Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin.

NEH 13:27. Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to transgress against our God in marrying strange wives?

1COR 7:39. The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.

1COR 7:12. But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away.

1COR 7:13. And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him.

1COR 7:14. For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.

1COR 7:15. But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace.

1COR 7:16. For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?
