A. Christians are instructed to do honest work:EPH 4:28. Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. 1TH 4:11. And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; 1TH 4:12. That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing. 2TH 3:10. For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. 2TH 3:11. For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. 2TH 3:12. Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. TIT 3:14. And let our's also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful. B. We must keep our priorities straight:ACT 20:35. I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. EPH 4:28. Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. 1COR 7:31. And they that use this world, as not abusing it: for the fashion of this world passeth away. C. Don't labour to be rich but merely for your needs:LUK 12:15. And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. 1TIM 6:8. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. D. Consider the fate of those who covet riches:PSA 49:16. Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased; PSA 49:17. For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him. PSA 49:18. Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself. PSA 49:19. He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light. PSA 49:20. Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish. MAR 10:24. And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! MAR 10:25. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. 1TIM 6:9. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 1TIM 6:10. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. JAM 1:10. But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. JAM 1:11. For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways. JAM 5:1. Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. JAM 5:2. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. JAM 5:3. Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. JAM 5:4. Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. E. Warning regarding wrong attitudes:JOB 31:24. If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence; JOB 31:25. If I rejoice because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much; JOB 31:28. This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above. HAG 1:6. Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes. LUK 12:19. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. LUK 12:20. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? LUK 12:21. So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. 1TIM 6:10. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. REV 3:15. I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. REV 3:16. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. REV 3:17. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: REV 3:18. I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. |
