Our Relationship to the World

8. The work of pastors fulltime Christian workers & missionaries:
PreviousNext

A. The compensation of pastors & teachers:

1TIM 5:17. Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

1TIM 5:18. For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.

1COR 9:6. Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working?

1COR 9:7. Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?

1COR 9:8. Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?

1COR 9:9. For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?

1COR 9:13. Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?

B. The work of missionaries is preaching the gospel; they are reapers in God's harvest & are worthy of wages:

JOH 4:35. Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.

MAT 9:37. Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;

MAT 9:38. Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

JOH 4:36. And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.

1COR 9:13. Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?

1COR 9:14. Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

1COR 9:10. Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.

C. Christians with secular jobs helping support God's fulltime workers:

ROM 15:27. It hath pleased them verily; and their debtors they are. For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things.

1COR 9:11. If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?

GAL 6:6. Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.

LUK 8:3. And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.

LUK 10:7. And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.

MAT 10:10. Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.

1TH 2:9. For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.

2COR 11:8. I robbed other churches, taking wages of them, to do you service.

D. Fulltime workers sometimes hold secular jobs also:

ACT 18:1. After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth;

ACT 18:2. And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them.

ACT 18:3. And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers.

ACT 20:34. Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me.

ACT 20:35. I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

1COR 4:11. Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace;

1COR 4:12. And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it:

E. But when possible they should avoid time-consuming secular jobs & devote their full time to their main work:

JOH 6:27. Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

1COR 7:23. Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men.

1COR 9:6. Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working?

1COR 9:7. Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?

2TIM 2:4. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.
