4. Good reasons for missing sleep:

A. To pray desperately:

1SAM 15:11. It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night.

LUK 6:12. And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.

1TH 3:10. Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith?

B. To rise early & pray:

1SAM 1:19. And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.

MAR 1:35. And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.

PSA 57:8. Awake up, my glory; awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early.

PSA 57:9. I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people: I will sing unto thee among the nations.

PSA 119:147. I prevented the dawning of the morning, and cried: I hoped in thy word.

C. To do your job:

GEN 31:38. This twenty years have I been with thee; thy ewes and thy she goats have not cast their young, and the rams of thy flock have I not eaten.

GEN 31:39. That which was torn of beasts I brought not unto thee; I bare the loss of it; of my hand didst thou require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night.

GEN 31:40. Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep departed from mine eyes.

D. Caution about getting overtired:

PSA 127:2. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.

ACT 20:7. And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.

ACT 20:8. And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together.

ACT 20:9. And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead.
