Suffering


1. Who causes suffering?--God or the devil?

A. The devil causes much of man's suffering:

ACT 10:38. How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

MAT 15:22. And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.

LUK 8:29. (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)

2TI 2:26. And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

B. But it is God Who allows the devil to bring suffering:

JOB 1:8. And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?

JOB 1:9. Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

JOB 1:10. Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

JOB 1:11. But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.

JOB 1:12. And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.

JOB 1:13. And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

JOB 1:14. And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:

JOB 1:15. And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

JOB 1:16. While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

JOB 1:17. While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

JOB 1:18. While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

JOB 1:19. And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

JOB 2:3. And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

JOB 2:4. And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.

JOB 2:5. But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.

JOB 2:6. And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.

JOB 2:7. So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

1CO 5:5. To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

1TI 1:20. Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.

C. God is ultimately responsible for allowing suffering:

EXO 4:11. And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD?

1SA 2:6. The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.

1SA 2:7. The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up.

ISA 45:7. I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.

AMO 3:6. Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?

DEU 32:39. See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.

2CH 15:2. And he went out to meet Asa, and said unto him, Hear ye me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin; The LORD is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you.

2CH 15:5. And in those times there was no peace to him that went out, nor to him that came in, but great vexations were upon all the inhabitants of the countries.

2CH 15:6. And nation was destroyed of nation, and city of city: for God did vex them with all adversity.

JOB 12:14. Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again: he shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.

JOB 12:15. Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up: also he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth.

JOB 12:16. With him is strength and wisdom: the deceived and the deceiver are his.

JOB 12:17. He leadeth counsellors away spoiled, and maketh the judges fools.

JOB 12:18. He looseth the bond of kings, and girdeth their loins with a girdle.

JOB 12:19. He leadeth princes away spoiled, and overthroweth the mighty.

JOB 12:20. He removeth away the speech of the trusty, and taketh away the understanding of the aged.

JOB 12:21. He poureth contempt upon princes, and weakeneth the strength of the mighty.

JOB 12:22. He discovereth deep things out of darkness, and bringeth out to light the shadow of death.

JOB 12:23. He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them: he enlargeth the nations, and straiteneth them again.

JOB 12:24. He taketh away the heart of the chief of the people of the earth, and causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way.

JOB 12:25. They grope in the dark without light, and he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.

PSA 66:10. For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou hast tried us, as silver is tried.

PSA 66:11. Thou broughtest us into the net; thou laidst affliction upon our loins.

PSA 66:12. Thou hast caused men to ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water: but thou broughtest us out into a wealthy place.

MIC 1:12. For the inhabitant of Maroth waited carefully for good: but evil came down from the LORD unto the gate of Jerusalem.
