A. Suffering has been a fact of life since the fall of man:GEN 3:16. Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. GEN 3:17. And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; GEN 3:18. Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; GEN 3:19. In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. JOB 5:6. Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground; JOB 5:7. Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward. JOB 14:1. Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble. PSA 90:10. The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. B. We often bring on suffering by sin & disobedience:GEN 42:21. And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us. JOB 4:8. Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same. PSA 31:9. Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, yea, my soul and my belly. PSA 31:10. For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are consumed. PSA 38:1. O lord, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. PSA 38:2. For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore. PSA 38:3. There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin. PSA 38:4. For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me. PSA 38:5. My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness. PSA 38:6. I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. PSA 38:7. For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh. PSA 38:8. I am feeble and sore broken: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart. PSA 107:17. Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted. ISA 66:4. I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not. JER 5:25. Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you. JER 30:15. Why criest thou for thine affliction? thy sorrow is incurable for the multitude of thine iniquity: because thy sins were increased, I have done these things unto thee. LAM 1:20. Behold, O LORD; for I am in distress: my bowels are troubled; mine heart is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled: abroad the sword bereaveth, at home there is as death. C. Because we're disbelieving or disobeying God's Word:DEU 11:28. And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known. PSA 78:32. For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works. PSA 78:33. Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble. PSA 107:11. Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High: PSA 107:12. Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help. |
