3. The damage an uncontrolled tongue will do:

A. An uncontrolled tongue will defile you & others:

MAT 15:11. Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.

MAT 15:18. But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.

JAM 3:6. And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

B. A talebearing (gossiping) tongue is a fire:

JAM 3:5. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

JAM 3:6. And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

PRO 16:27. An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire.

C. A slanderous wicked tongue is deadly poison:

JAM 3:8. But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

PSA 140:3. They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders' poison is under their lips. Selah.

ECC 10:11. Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.

ROM 3:13. Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:

D. A vainbabbling tongue destroys like cancer:

2TIM 2:16. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

2TIM 2:17. And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;

E. A sharp malicious tongue can inflict deep wounds:

PRO 12:18. There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.

PRO 25:18. A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

PRO 26:22. The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

F. A malicious tongue destroys & kills:

PRO 11:9. An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.

PRO 18:21. Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

PRO 26:28. A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

G. It destroys love & friendship:

PRO 16:28. A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.

ACT 14:2. But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren.
