A. Ignore it if you can; don't be offended:ECC 7:21. Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee: ECC 7:22. For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others. PSA 119:165. Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them. B. Don't speak evil of them in return:1PE 2:21. For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: 1PE 2:22. Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: 1PE 2:23. Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: ISA 53:7. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. ISA 53:9. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. 1PE 3:9. Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. C. Let your good works disprove their lies:TIT 2:7. In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, TIT 2:8. Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. 1PE 2:12. Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. 1PE 2:15. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: 1PE 3:16. Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. D. Jesus remained silent before His accusers:ISA 53:7. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. MAT 27:14. And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly. LUK 23:9. Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing. LUK 22:67. Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe: LUK 22:68. And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go. E. But there are times to speak out & give answer:ACT 21:40. And when he had given him licence, Paul stood on the stairs, and beckoned with the hand unto the people. And when there was made a great silence, he spake unto them in the Hebrew tongue, saying, ACT 24:10. Then Paul, after that the governor had beckoned unto him to speak, answered, Forasmuch as I know that thou hast been of many years a judge unto this nation, I do the more cheerfully answer for myself: ACT 26:1. Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and answered for himself: 1PE 3:15. But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: MAT 10:18. And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles. MAT 10:19. But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. MAT 10:20. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you. |
