Trials, Temptations & Tribulations

11. How to resist & overcome temptation:
PreviousNext

A. Keep your eyes on Jesus:

HEB 11:27. By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

HEB 12:2. Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

HEB 12:3. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

PRO 4:25. Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.

COL 3:2. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

COL 3:3. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

B. Pray & ask the Lord to help you:

PSA 17:5. Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not.

PSA 56:13. For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

MAT 6:13. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

MAT 26:41. Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

LUK 21:36. Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

MAT 18:19. Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

MAT 18:20. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

JAM 5:16. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

C. Resist the devil:

EPH 4:27. Neither give place to the devil.

JAM 4:7. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

D. Cling to the Word:

PSA 119:80. Let my heart be sound in thy statutes; that I be not ashamed.

JOH 15:3. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

2PE 1:4. Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

REV 3:10. Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

E. Be willing to give up your own desires out of love for Jesus:

GAL 5:16. This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

GAL 5:24. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

EPH 4:20. But ye have not so learned Christ;

EPH 4:21. If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:

EPH 4:22. That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

EPH 4:23. And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

ROM 6:16. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

PHI 3:8. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

F. Exercise willpower & determine not to yield to temptation:

ROM 6:13. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

1CO 9:27. But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

1CO 16:13. Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.

2TI 2:3. Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

2TI 2:22. Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

1PE 1:14. As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

1PE 2:11. Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

1CO 10:5. But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

1CO 10:6. Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

G. Fear the Lord & be afraid to disobey Him:

PRO 14:27. The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

PRO 16:6. By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.

PRO 23:17. Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

1SA 12:24. Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.

H. Be serious & sober about serving the Lord:

TIT 2:12. Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

1TH 5:8. But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

1PE 1:13. Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

1PE 4:7. But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

1PE 5:8. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

I. Keep your heart & mind on the final goal:

HEB 11:25. Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

HEB 11:26. Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.

HEB 12:2. Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
