Unity

2. How to work at keeping united:
PreviousNext

EPH 4:3. Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

A. Have the Word as a unifying standard:

1COR 14:37. If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

PHI 3:16. Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.

1TH 2:13. For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

1TH 2:14. For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:

B. Be agreeable & likeminded:

ROM 15:5. Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:

ROM 15:6. That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

ROM 12:16. Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

1COR 1:10. Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

PHI 2:2. Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

ACT 2:46. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

PHI 4:2. I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord.

C. Be at peace with fellow-workers:

ROM 14:19. Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.

COL 3:15. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

1TH 5:13. And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.

D. Have love & concern for one another:

PRO 10:12. Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.

ROM 12:10. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;

1TH 2:7. But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children:

1TH 2:8. So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.

1COR 12:25. That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.

1COR 12:26. And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.

EPH 4:16. From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

E. Be kind gentle & courteous to one another:

EPH 4:32. And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

2TI 2:24. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,

1PE 3:8. Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:

1COR 11:33. Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another.

PRO 18:24. A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

F. Take people where they're at:

ROM 14:1. Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.

ROM 14:2. For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.

ROM 14:3. Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.

ROM 14:4. Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.

ROM 14:5. One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

ROM 14:6. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.

ROM 14:7. For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.

ROM 14:8. For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's.

ROM 14:9. For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.

ROM 14:10. But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

ROM 14:11. For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.

ROM 14:12. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

ROM 14:13. Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way.

ROM 14:14. I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean.

ROM 14:15. But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died.

ROM 14:16. Let not then your good be evil spoken of:

ROM 14:17. For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

ROM 14:18. For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.

ROM 14:19. Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.

ROM 14:20. For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.

ROM 14:21. It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.

G. Avoid offending people:

1COR 10:32. Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:

1COR 10:33. Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

PRO 18:19. A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.

H. Be careful what you say:

PRO 17:9. He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.

2TI 2:23. But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.

TIT 3:2. To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.

JAM 3:16. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

JAM 3:17. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

ECC 5:2. Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.

I. Control your temper; be slow to speak:

PRO 14:29. He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.

PRO 15:1. A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

PRO 15:18. A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.

PRO 25:8. Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame.

PHI 2:3. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

JAM 1:19. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

PRO 3:30. Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm.

PRO 26:17. He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.

J. Humbly discuss disagreements with elders:

1TI 5:1. Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;

K. Sort out oughts before doing anything else:

MAT 5:23. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;

MAT 5:24. Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

MAR 11:25. And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

JAM 5:9. Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.

L. Avoid being partial or playing favourites:

1TI 5:21. I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.

JAM 3:17. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

JAM 2:1. My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.

M. Value peace above selfish interests:

ROM 12:18. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

1COR 6:7. Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?

PHI 2:4. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

N. Share unselfishly with others:

ACT 4:32. And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.

1COR 10:33. Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

2COR 8:9. For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

O. Return good for evil:

MAT 5:44. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

ROM 12:21. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

1TH 5:15. See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

P. Retaliation forbidden:

LEV 19:18. Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.

PRO 20:22. Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.

PRO 24:29. Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work.

ROM 12:17. Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.

ROM 12:19. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

1PE 3:9. Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.
