A. Pride & lust:PRO 13:10. Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom. PRO 28:25. He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made fat. JAM 4:1. From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? JAM 4:2. Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. JAM 4:3. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. B. Not walking in the Spirit:1COR 3:3. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? GAL 5:19. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, GAL 5:20. Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, GAL 5:21. Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. C. Ill feelings & hatred:PRO 10:12. Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins. PRO 16:28. A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends. PRO 26:24. He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him; D. Envy & jealousy:ROM 13:13. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. 1COR 13:4. Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, GAL 5:26. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. JAM 3:14. But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. JAM 3:16. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. Self-exaltation & desire for leadership:NUM 12:1. And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman. NUM 12:2. And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it. NUM 12:3. (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.) NUM 12:4. And the LORD spake suddenly unto Moses, and unto Aaron, and unto Miriam, Come out ye three unto the tabernacle of the congregation. And they three came out. NUM 12:5. And the LORD came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam: and they both came forth. NUM 12:6. And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream. NUM 12:7. My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house. NUM 12:8. With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses? NUM 12:9. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against them; and he departed. NUM 12:10. And the cloud departed from off the tabernacle; and, behold, Miriam became leprous, white as snow: and Aaron looked upon Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous. NUM 12:11. And Aaron said unto Moses, Alas, my lord, I beseech thee, lay not the sin upon us, wherein we have done foolishly, and wherein we have sinned. NUM 12:12. Let her not be as one dead, of whom the flesh is half consumed when he cometh out of his mother's womb. NUM 12:13. And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, Heal her now, O God, I beseech thee. NUM 12:14. And the LORD said unto Moses, If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed seven days? let her be shut out from the camp seven days, and after that let her be received in again. NUM 12:15. And Miriam was shut out from the camp seven days: and the people journeyed not till Miriam was brought in again. NUM 16:1. Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men: NUM 16:2. And they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, men of renown: NUM 16:3. And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the LORD? NUM 16:4. And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face: NUM 16:5. And he spake unto Korah and unto all his company, saying, Even to morrow the LORD will shew who are his, and who is holy; and will cause him to come near unto him: even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near unto him. NUM 16:6. This do; Take you censers, Korah, and all his company; NUM 16:7. And put fire therein, and put incense in them before the LORD to morrow: and it shall be that the man whom the LORD doth choose, he shall be holy: ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi. NUM 16:8. And Moses said unto Korah, Hear, I pray you, ye sons of Levi: NUM 16:9. Seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them? NUM 16:10. And he hath brought thee near to him, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee: and seek ye the priesthood also? NUM 16:11. For which cause both thou and all thy company are gathered together against the LORD: and what is Aaron, that ye murmur against him? NUM 16:12. And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab: which said, We will not come up: NUM 16:13. Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land that floweth with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, except thou make thyself altogether a prince over us? NUM 16:14. Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land that floweth with milk and honey, or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up. NUM 16:15. And Moses was very wroth, and said unto the LORD, Respect not thou their offering: I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them. NUM 16:16. And Moses said unto Korah, Be thou and all thy company before the LORD, thou, and they, and Aaron, to morrow: NUM 16:17. And take every man his censer, and put incense in them, and bring ye before the LORD every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; thou also, and Aaron, each of you his censer. NUM 16:18. And they took every man his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood in the door of the tabernacle of the congregation with Moses and Aaron. NUM 16:19. And Korah gathered all the congregation against them unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the congregation. NUM 16:20. And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, NUM 16:21. Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment. NUM 16:22. And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation? NUM 16:23. And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, NUM 16:24. Speak unto the congregation, saying, Get you up from about the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. NUM 16:25. And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him. NUM 16:26. And he spake unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of their's, lest ye be consumed in all their sins. NUM 16:27. So they gat up from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood in the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little children. NUM 16:28. And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of mine own mind. NUM 16:29. If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then the LORD hath not sent me. NUM 16:30. But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD. NUM 16:31. And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them: NUM 16:32. And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. NUM 16:33. They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation. NUM 16:34. And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also. NUM 16:35. And there came out a fire from the LORD, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense. LUK 22:24. And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. ACT 20:30. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. GAL 5:26. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. G. Arguing over minor doctrines & theorising:1TI 6:3. If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; 1TI 6:4. He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, 1TI 6:5. Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. H. Bitterness:HEB 12:15. Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; I. Anger & a quick temper:PRO 15:18. A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife. PRO 29:22. An angry man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression. J. Repeating things we know we shouldn't:PRO 17:9. He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends. PRO 26:20. Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth. JAM 1:26. If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. K. Inability to stop arguing:PRO 20:3. It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling. PRO 17:14. The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with. |
