6. Keeping (obeying heeding) the Word:

A. It's important to heed & keep the Word:

DEU 11:1. Therefore thou shalt love the LORD thy God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, alway.

HEB 2:1. Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

2PE 1:19. We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

B. Obeying & keeping the Word proves we know & love Jesus:

PSA 119:167. My soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly.

JOH 8:31. Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

JOH 14:15. If ye love me, keep my commandments.

JOH 14:21. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

JOH 14:23. Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

JAM 1:22. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

JAM 1:23. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

JAM 1:24. For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

1JOH 2:3. And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

1JOH 5:3. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

2JOH 6. And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

REV 3:8. I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

C. The benefits of keeping the Word:

DEU 7:9. Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;

PSA 1:2. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

PSA 1:3. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

PSA 37:31. The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.

LUK 8:15. But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

LUK 11:28. But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

JOH 15:7. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

JOH 15:10. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

1JOH 2:5. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

1JOH 3:24. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

1JOH 2:24. Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.

D. The Holy Spirit will guide you in the Word:

PSA 25:5. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.

JOH 14:26. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

JOH 16:13. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

1JOH 2:27. But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

PSA 119:18. Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.

EZE 36:27. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

E. Additional verses on the importance of keeping the Word:

PSA 119:2. Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.

PSA 119:4. Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently.

PSA 119:33. Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end.

PSA 119:34. Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.

PSA 119:55. I have remembered thy name, O LORD, in the night, and have kept thy law.

PSA 119:57. Thou art my portion, O LORD: I have said that I would keep thy words.

PSA 119:60. I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments.

PSA 119:63. I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts.

PSA 119:67. Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word.

PSA 119:88. Quicken me after thy lovingkindness; so shall I keep the testimony of thy mouth.

PSA 119:100. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.

PSA 119:115. Depart from me, ye evildoers: for I will keep the commandments of my God.

PSA 119:129. Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them.

PSA 119:134. Deliver me from the oppression of man: so will I keep thy precepts.

PSA 119:145. I cried with my whole heart; hear me, O LORD: I will keep thy statutes.

PSA 119:146. I cried unto thee; save me, and I shall keep thy testimonies.

PSA 119:167. My soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly.

PSA 119:168. I have kept thy precepts and thy testimonies: for all my ways are before thee.

PRO 3:1. My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:

PRO 3:21. My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion:

PRO 4:4. He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.

PRO 4:13. Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.

PRO 4:20. My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.

PRO 4:21. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.

PRO 6:20. My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

PRO 6:22. When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.

PRO 7:1. My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.

PRO 7:2. Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.

PRO 7:3. Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.

PRO 19:16. He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his own soul; but he that despiseth his ways shall die.

PRO 22:17. Bow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge.

PRO 22:18. For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; they shall withal be fitted in thy lips.

PRO 28:4. They that forsake the law praise the wicked: but such as keep the law contend with them.

PRO 28:7. Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father.

PRO 29:18. Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

ECC 8:5. Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerneth both time and judgment.

ECC 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
